Under 10 footballers finish with a win and a defeat

30th June 2010

The Under 10 footballers finished off their regular season before the summer break at home against Clontarf on Saturday 19th June and away to Sylvesters on Tuesday 22nd. Small match reports are listed below.

General news and thanks etc:

Training is now over until Wednesday August 11 at 6.30 on pitch 12A. If any boys wish to come down and have a kick around some of the mentors will be at pitch 12a from 6.30 to 7.45 every wednesday starting tomorrow 30th June. we intend to use this time to go back over some basic drills which the newer players might find useful.

The mentors would like to thank all the boys for attending training and matches during the year. Every single player is a better player than they were last January and huge improvements have been seen in their general play during matches. The mentors would also thank all the parents for bringing the boys to and from training and matches. we appreciate the effort the parents make each matchday. Thanks also to all the fathers who help each week with putting the goals up and down, a task which takes away from the mentors time in preparing the children for the matches. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks to those who also acted as umpires and referees during the year. Enjoy the break and see you all on August 11th.

MATCH REPORTS

A team beat Clontarf by 38 to 28 in a well contested game. All players made a better effort than normal in trying to make it difficult for Clontarf players to play and this was a big factor in the win. Physical but fair challenges are a big part of the game as we get older and we need to get better at this part of the game. When we got the ball we scored some lovely scores. The defence fell asleep early in the second half and let Clontarf close the gap but we woke up again, worked hard and stretched the lead to record a good victory. Everyone played well that day especially Kevin Byrne who showed a great example in driving out from the back with the ball and releasing the ball to a team mate rather than just kicking long and Daragh Nolan who defended very well and didnt let the opponent in behind him.

We were hoping that the good performance on Saturday would carry through to Tuesday but the team played very poorly in the first half to enable Sylvesters take a big half time lead. We didnt compete physically for the ball despite doing so well against Clontarf and most players didnt mark their men properly or track back when we didnt have the ball which is not good enough. Many players seemed tired, disinterested or couldnt concentrate on the match. When we did get the ball we kicked it long without looking for a Raheny man to pass to. Players have been told to look for a pass rather than kick the ball away (unless they are under pressure) and this is something the mentors will be working on in the coming months. In the second half we got to grips with their best player and restricted his possession and the second half was much more even but the result was never in doubt due to the first half display. All players must remember in future to concentrate on their jobs within the team for the whole 40 minutes and not just for one half. We cannot switch off during games or not start games well and think we can come back and win because the damage will be done. Best for Raheny were Brian Maher who fought hard and passed well, and Daragh English who played very well up front and scored a great point.

B Team v Clontarf

Clontarf have proved to be the B team's favourite opposition this year. As well as a friendly win in pre season , we have won well both home and away on the league. The team scored 39 points on the day our second highest of the league and only conceded 10 points. Adam McDonnell was the high scorer on the day scoring 3 points, 3 high catches and 4 goals. The other forwards on the day also did well Adam Codd with 2 points and a goal and Darragh English also got 2 pts. Other scorers on the day were David McSharry, Liam Dunne and Liam Synott . The defence deserves praise for limiting the opposition to just 3 points in the match (plus one catch) with the only score in the second half coming from a free. Well done to Simon Geoghegan, Stephen O’Shea, Conor Kelly and Tom Keogh for keeping the score so low. As usual this was a good team effort. Passing continues improve and everybody is playing well now. Well done .

A much tighter game than normal for the Bs. The lead at half time was 22-8 . The scores in the first half were well spread as normal for this team with 2 points each for Adam Codd and Liam Dunne (with a high catch too) one point each from David McSharry and Tom Keogh and a goal from Liam Synott. The defence of Tom Keogh , Stephen O’Shea ,Simon Geoghegan and Conor Kelly kept the the scores down well in the first half and only conceded 2 late points.

Sylvesters came back strongly into the game in the second half and as Raheny pushed on to get more scores we were caught on the break a few times. We conceded 5 points (15) in the second half. Our scorers in the second half were Liam S (1 point), Adam C (1 goal, 1 catch) and Declan McDermott. Declan had a great second half scoring 3 points with a high catch to end top scorer on the day.

Well done to all those players on the B team. You played 10 league matches in the last 5 months , winning 8, drawing one and just losing one narrowly to Whitehall. Keep it up !

C team v Clontarf

played well overall to win by 17-7. Best for Raheny were Nathan Morgan who had a great run from midfield and a lovely one-two hand pass with with Patrick Kelly to score a ncie point, Mark Branigan and Eoin Finnan. Raheny gave 100% effort and while the play was a bit scrappy in the first half, we improved in the 2nd. A big improvement today was the players holding on to cathces and using the ball well. All players looked for the ball and for free players to pass to. well done to all.

C team v Sylvesters

Unfortunately we didnt bring our Clontarf form into this game and were beaten by 20-6 with Jack Welsh scoring two good points. Raheny players were slow to the ball during the game and this left Sylvesters with too much clean possession and they punished us. Put this behind you lads and remember to fight for every ball in future.
